Maryland FAMLI (Paid Family & Medical Leave): Key Deadlines and Employer Next Steps

October 20, 2026

Maryland’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance program (FAMLI), a state-mandated paid leave program created to provide eligible workers with job-protected paid time off for major life and health events, is moving toward employer implementation. In general, employers with at least one Maryland-localized employee should be preparing to register and comply with the program. This includes employers located outside Maryland if they have employees whose work is localized in Maryland. The key question is typically where the employee works (and how their work is “localized”), not simply where the employee lives. For remote, hybrid, or multistate employees, the result can depend on the employee’s work location, base of operations, where work is directed or controlled, and other facts.

Key Upcoming Dates

  • Employer registration: Employers should register before payroll withholding begins. Registration is now open.
  • Payroll Contributions Begin January 1, 2027: Employers must begin withholding FAMLI contributions from employee wages.
  • April 30, 2027: First quarterly contribution payment is due.
  • January 2028: FAMLI benefits are scheduled to become available to eligible employees.
